ESV Men’s Devotional Bible #Giveaway #MensDevotionalBible #FlyBy

I’ve handed the review of this particular bible over to my husband since it’s intended for men and I know he’ll give it a great review. So here is what he thought:

When I found out I’d have the opportunity to review a men’s devotional bible, I was excited and motivated to read it. While I do make a regular habit of reading the scriptures and looking for ways to apply them to my life (this is actually something I try to do every morning while eating breakfast), I’ll admit that I struggle to maintain that every day, especially on weekends when my routine is a little different, and especially on days when I’m feeling down or discouraged (which sadly happens a lot).
I was delighted to see that this bible is the English Standard Version (ESV). Back in bible college, I learned to study scripture by digging deeply into the original texts–the Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic. I studied New Testament Greek in university for two years. In all of that, I found a richness in the scriptures that I never got from the English translations, because there was so much more depth to understanding the original words used. In my opinion, the ESV is one of the most well-balanced translations that is accurate to the literal translations from the original text (the goal of the ESV) as well as accurate in the metaphorical and abstract meanings. It matters enough to me that I go out of my way to read the ESV over other translations.
An image of the inside of the ESV Men's Devotional BibleOne of my courses in college required me to read the bible cover-to-cover in 4 days as a test of our speed-reading and retention. I’m afraid I’ve lost part of that skill, so I haven’t read this one cover to cover, yet. But I began with Genesis, and I found something I loved: each book contains a synopsis prefacing it, often focusing on issues from a man’s perspective. Many study bibles include this, but it’s refreshing to see a bit more of a focus on men and our roles and responsibilities. Scattered throughout the remainder of the book–every few pages–there is a single page dedicated to a small devotional thought, relevant to that section of the book. It works well as a bible-walkthrough, as it’s a fantastic way to read the scriptures in their entirety and also read a devotional thought to help explain the value and worth of that passage of scripture.
I especially appreciate how each devotion is not an additional story, as though it’s an enhancement to the scripture, but rather more like a study commentary, in a casual and relevant manner, to help explain the scriptures. I always worry about devotions that try to add modern parables, short stories, or cheesy analogies as though the scripture alone isn’t good enough. But a devotion that helps to explain and apply the scriptures to our daily lives is a welcome and refreshing way to study.
I certainly can’t do this edition justice in a single post, but I can leave you with my thought on its value. For the men who are reading this: if you’re like me; if you’re someone who desires to find some understanding in life that will help you to be a better husband, a better father, a better man overall, there’s no book worth turning to outside of the scriptures themselves. But they can be hard to read, hard to follow, and hard to remain committed to without some guidance or support along the way. And if the other men in your life don’t provide that for you–which is something I struggle with–then a study guide for the scriptures is one of the best places to start. The most important part of this study bible is not the commentary, but the scripture itself… but the study is a great way to help you start reading, to make it a habit, and to understand and apply what you’re reading along the way.
